July 1st - Mitochondria

Speaker: Dr Kevin Wilkinson, Lecturer in Molecular Neuroscience, School of Physiology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience at Bristol University.

Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell. But recent research has made us realise that there is far more to them than simply supplying us with energy.

~ What are mitochondria and what do they do?
~ How did mitochondria evolve?
~ What happens when mitochondria ‘go wrong’?

Kevin will also be sharing details of his current work including:
~ How do mitochondria get to where they are needed in the cell?
~ Cells can ‘swap’ mitochondria - how do they do it, and why?

Join us aboard the MV Balmoral from 7pm for a 7.45pm start. Tour the ship, grab a drink at the bar, and settle in for a revealing evening.
