May 5th - How does the brain change when we learn something new?
Dr Kevin Wilkinson – University of Bristol
Our brains are made up of billions of neurons that communicate through tiny junctions called synapses. These connections are not fixed: they strengthen, weaken, and reorganise as we learn and form memories.
In this talk, I will describe how synapses transmit information, how we can observe them changing during learning, and what happens when these processes go wrong. Disruptions in synaptic communication are thought to play a key role in conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and understanding them may help us develop better treatments.
Join us aboard the MV Balmoral from 7pm for a 7.45pm start. Tour the ship, grab a drink at the bar, and settle in for a revealing evening.
