October 6th: Music and the Brain
Music and Our Brains: An exploration of our emotional connection to music, drawing on landmark research and musical examples.
Our speakers, Lucie and Anna, are both musicians performing locally and internationally.
Have you ever cried at a familiar film theme, even years after watching the movie? Or heard a song on the radio and suddenly felt nostalgic for a time before you were even born?
Music can trigger remarkably powerful emotions, but why does it affect us so deeply? Music psychologists have been trying to understand how our brains process music and why our emotional responses to it can be so strong — and the answers are more complicated than you might think.
Taking an evolutionary perspective, we'll explore what neuropsychological research and studies of our musical experiences can tell us about how the brain processes music, why music can make us feel everything from joy and excitement to nostalgia and sadness — and why we sometimes actively seek out music that makes us sad.
Join us aboard the MV Balmoral from 7pm for a 7.45pm start. Tour the ship, grab a drink at the bar, and settle in for a revealing evening.
This is a FREE event — arrive early to get a seat.
